ELIXIR: the home of life science information
A distributed data infrastructure: Bringing together data resources for maximum knowledge and understanding
ELIXIR brings together life science data resources from 22 members located in 21 countries across Europe and from the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL).
It manages and safeguards biological, medical and environmental ‘big data’ through databases, software tools, cloud storage and computing facilities, and training opportunities.
Organised as national nodes and a hub, ELIXIR is a focal point for experts to collaborate on challenges with far-reaching impacts ranging from resource interoperability and secure access to human data, to scalable genomics. For example, the Human Protein Atlas (an ELIXIR Core Data Resource) is used 1.2 million times a year by scientists from 198 countries.
The UK Node of ELIXIR (ELIXIR-UK) brings together 15 UK organisations which unite experts and resources in bioinformatics and computational biology at a national level. In addition to ELIXIR-UK, the ELIXIR Hub is also located in the UK and is hosted by the European Molecular Biology Laboratory-European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) within the Wellcome Genome Campus.
