Consumer datasets used to help understand the impact of COVID-19 on healthcare and business sectors
The Consumer Data Research Centre (CDRC) was established in 2014 to provide a national data service that facilitates stakeholder access to commercial datasets. These datasets include information on areas such as retail purchasing behaviours and urban travel patterns, collected to enable organisations to operate more effectively.
Through funding from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the Consumer Data Research Centre allows academic researchers to access this information, providing valuable insights into human behaviour and economic trends.
The Consumer Data Research Centre is leveraging its analytical expertise and diverse datasets to help understand the impact of COVID-19 on different parts of society.
In healthcare, researchers have been using the CDRC Modelled Ethnicity Proportions dataset and corresponding Ethnicity Estimator software to better understand the impacts of COVID-19 on different groups in society. So far, these studies have provided valuable insights into the disproportionate impact of the pandemic on individuals in BAME categories, helping to inform healthcare policymaking.
In business, the CDRC has been working through its parent organisation, the Leeds Institute for Data Analytics, to provide a COVID-19 data alliance with scientific expertise and access to global academic research networks. Led by Rolls-Royce, the alliance will combine a wealth of information, including datasets on business, travel and retail activities, to understand the wider economic impacts of the pandemic. Its findings will be openly published to support a rapid global response to COVID-19 and help manage the recovery process.
